Issue #45: Fortune’s Gate

Intro: Greetings, fellow RPG gamers across the globe!
This one’s reaching you a day late, so thanks for waiting at Fortune’s Gate.
From Kyoto’s Fushimi Inari slopes, where thousands of vermilion torii climb Mount Inari like a loading bar, stone kitsune guard the path with keys in their jaws, and omikuji fortune slips flutter on shrine racks, I’m locked in to deliver this dispatch. Kyoto is wearing its warrior colors this month: Capcom’s Osaka-built Onimusha: Way of the Sword drops Miyamoto Musashi into a demon-haunted Edo-era Kyoto, and it sold over 1 million units on launch day (Capcom IR: https://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/news/html/e260907.html). Fortune’s Gate is the moment you read your slip and step through anyway: the wish promised to an arena champion, the roguelike run you start knowing you’ll fall, the Marine who checks the odds, checks his gear, then moves. What’s the luckiest (or unluckiest) roll that changed a whole campaign for you? A nat 20, a gacha pull, a permadeath? Hit reply and walk me through!

PC RPG Spotlight: WANE (Announced Sep 20 → Demo 2027)

WANE. Image: Shoreline Games
Shoreline Games and Metis Creative premiered WANE at the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct. It’s an industrial-noir occult turn-based RPG set inside Ravelle, the shifting memory-labyrinth of fading archaeologist Declan Wayne. You build a three-person party, fight grid-based tactical battles that hinge on cover, line of sight, and percentage-based attacks, then sell relics in Declan’s antiquarian shop to fund the next run. Steam wishlists are open, and a demo is targeted for 2027. Sources: Gematsu (https://www.gematsu.com/2026/09/industrial-noir-occult-turn-based-rpg-wane-announced-for-pc), PC Gamer (https://www.pcgamer.com/games/roguelike/memory-is-the-map-in-wane-a-roguelike-where-each-biome-is-a-corner-of-an-archaeologists-fading-mind/)
My opinion: WANE plays the odds like a Ravenloft Domain of Dread: every biome is a regret with walls, and every percentage shot is a coin toss at the gate. Metis Creative comes from tabletop, and it shows, because the party positioning reads like a well-run D&D encounter. The Marine in me respects a game that expects you to fall. Which adventurer anchors your first run? Reply!
Console RPG Spotlight: Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave (Switch 2, Out Now)
Nintendo and Intelligent Systems’ Switch 2 exclusive launched September 17 and is holding its ground: GfK Chart-Track ranked it No. 2 in the UK for Sept. 13–19. Four Flame Lords (Cai, Dietrich, Theodora, and Leda) compete in the Heroic Games for a wish granted by the Divine Sovereign Solel. New Blaze Arts trade HP for burst power, and TechRadar called it the best Switch 2 game so far. Sources: TechRadar (https://www.techradar.com/gaming/fire-emblem-fortunes-weave-review), Punch Jump (https://news.punchjump.com/2026/09/23/fire-emblem-fortunes-weave-no-2-in-uk-sales/)
My opinion: Fortune’s Weave gives this issue its name: a tournament where the prize is a wish, basically Tymora’s coin with a sovereign’s seal on it. Blaze Arts are Marine math. You spend blood now, take the objective, and live with the lower HP. Four paths through one capital feel like Kyoto itself, where the same street can drop you into a different century. Which Flame Lord did you pick first? Reply!
Mobile RPG Spotlight: Aniimo (iOS/Android Worldwide Launch Sep 23)

Aniimo. Image: Pawprint Studio
Pawprint Studio’s free-to-play creature-catching open-world RPG Aniimo launched worldwide on iOS and Android on September 23, with full cross-progression across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Global pre-registrations passed 40 million. More than 200 Aniimo roam the world of Idyll, and the signature Twining mechanic lets you merge with a creature to borrow its combat, traversal, and puzzle abilities. Sources: Aniimo official (https://www.aniimo.com/newslist/detail/100147), FunPlus (https://funplus.com/aniimo-launches-on-mobile-for-ios-and-android/), Pocket Gamer (https://www.pocketgamer.com/aniimo/out-now-on-mobile/)
My opinion: Aniimo is a kitsune shapeshift in your pocket. Twining feels like an Inari fox spirit taking a new form at the shrine gate, or a Pathfinder druid wild-shaping across the Mwangi Expanse. The real test of its fortune is whether it stays generous after launch week. Which Aniimo did you Twine with first? Reply!
MMORPG Spotlight: Final Fantasy XIV — A Nocturne for Heroes Returns (Through Oct 13)

Final Fantasy XIV: A Nocturne for Heroes. Image: Square Enix
The Final Fantasy XV collaboration event runs September 24 through October 13 (ends 23:59 JST), with the four-seat Regalia Type-G mount, the Lucian Prince costume set, and orchestrion rolls to earn. Also on October 13, Japanese data centers start testing same-region matching so Duty Finder can draw from the whole physical data center, ahead of Evercold in January 2027. Sources: The Lodestone (https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/topics/detail/ce9a589b2272b39e2987a7ef349b445c29b537b3), Nova Crystallis (https://novacrystallis.com/2026/09/final-fantasy-xiv-to-begin-implementing-same-region-player-matching-in-japan-in-october/)
My opinion: Nocturne is a four-seat road trip, Noctis’s crew rolling through Thanalan like a Route 66 convoy. Free glam plus a mount that seats half your static is the kind of loot fortune favors. The Japan-first matching test matters more, though: a bigger player pool should mean faster queue pops. Regalia secured yet? Reply!
Tabletop RPG Spotlight: D&D: World of Warcraft — First Previews + Season of Champions
This week gave us the first real look inside Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft, with creator previews walking through Dire Maul. The book has seven reimagined dungeons from the Deadmines to Onyxia’s Lair, rules for all 13 WoW classes, 11 new species, and professions for crafting between quests. The free Play-Along Pack on D&D Beyond already has two level-5 Dire Maul encounters. On the store side, physical kit sign-ups for Season of Champions close Oct 5, and the book releases Nov 17. Sources: Backseat Gamer (https://www.backseatgamer.com/news/dds-world-of-warcraft-book-opens-the-doors-to-dire-maul), D&D Beyond (https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/2205-everything-you-need-to-know-about-d-d-world-of), Wizards WPN (https://wpn.wizards.com/en/news/dnd-organized-play-season-of-champions)
My opinion: Here Forgotten Realms tabletop DNA shakes hands with the MMO that grew up on it. Faction renown and professions finally give downtime some teeth. A Deadmines mini-campaign is perfect bait for WoW players who’ve never rolled a d20, so ask your local game store if they’re running it. Horde or Alliance at your table? Reply!
Classic RPG Spotlight: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered (Unlocks Tonight)

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered. Image: CD PROJEKT RED
CD PROJEKT RED’s Remastered edition unlocks worldwide today, September 29, at 10:00 UTC (7 PM JST). It’s a free upgrade for owners on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, and Switch owners can claim the Switch 2 version. Base-game owners also get Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine free. Budget about 45 GB of storage. My opinion: Eleven years after Velen, Geralt’s road opens again. Crookback Bog is still the best Southern Gothic swamp tale in gaming, and now it gets fresh oil on the silver sword. A free upgrade plus free expansions is scout’s honor from CDPR. Fresh run, or straight back to Toussaint? Reply!
Streaming Spotlight: Dimension 20: Toylight (Dropout, Wednesdays)
Episode 3 of Dropout’s six-episode Toylight arrives Wednesday, September 30 at 7 PM ET (Thursday 8 AM JST). GM Brennan Lee Mulligan leads the Intrepid Heroes (Emily Axford, Ally Beardsley, Brian Murphy, Zac Oyama, Siobhan Thompson, and Lou Wilson) as toys defending the last flicker of a dying child’s imagination. Sources: Dropout (https://www.dropout.tv/faq/d20-toylight), Bleeding Cool (https://bleedingcool.com/tv/dropout-announces-dimension-20-toylight-premiering-september-16/)
Toylight has Toy Story heart and tsukumogami soul, from the Japanese belief that long-loved objects grow spirits. Which toy would you roll up? Reply!
Closing: Fortune’s Eternal Gate
That’s Issue #45’s gate thrown open: WANE’s memory-labyrinth, Fire Emblem’s wish-granting Heroic Games, Aniimo’s Twining, Final Fantasy XIV’s Regalia road trip, D&D’s trip to Azeroth, The Witcher 3 Remastered tonight, and Toylight burning against the dark. I’m Ryan Walter, forging strategies from Kyoto’s torii-lined slopes to gaming dens around the world. Fortune drives this issue: read the slip, then walk through the gate.
